Gajraj
A boat-shaped bowl carried by elephants. Two caparisoned elephants rise at either end, raised on their own small plinths, while a ring of elephant heads circles the pedestal foot below. The deep body is set with panels of meenakari in blue and soft aqua, each worked with silver flowers and lifted with gold blooms, and a pair of gold swans meet at the rim. It stands as much a centrepiece as a bowl.

The Detail
Worked entirely by hand in Jaipur, the piece turns a serving vessel into a sculpture for the table: the elephant as bearer, colour held within panels, gold used to mark the flowers and the birds. It is made to hold fruit, and made to hold the eye first.
