Darbar
A box crowned with a royal court. Its lid carries a darbar scene worked in silver and gold, showing a king enthroned beneath a parasol, attended by courtiers and fan-bearers, engraved in the manner of a miniature painting and ringed with gold beading. The sides run in dense silver floral nakshi, closed by an ornate gold clasp, so a scene of the court sits at the centre of the table.

The Detail
Worked entirely by hand in Jaipur, the piece turns a serving box into a painting in metal: a courtly scene rendered in fine line, gold picking out the figures, silver holding the ground. It is made to serve, and made to be read like a miniature.
