Ksheersagar
A box crowned with the ocean of creation. Its lid carries the Sheshashayi Vishnu in full meenakari: the Lord reclining on the coils of the serpent Shesha upon the cosmic sea, Lakshmi at his feet, and a lotus rising between them, with the water worked in blue enamel and lily-buds along the shore. The oval sides continue in fine silver floral engraving lifted with gold blooms, closed by a sculpted clasp.

The Detail
Worked entirely by hand in Jaipur, the piece treats a serving box as a canvas: a sacred scene raised and enamelled across the lid, the ornament carried unbroken around the walls, a devotional image made to sit at the centre of a table. It is made to serve, and made to be opened like a small shrine.
